Amfan Disaster Relief Project

Our Amphan Relief Project (2) at the Sundarbans, was held on 12th July’2020.
We, the Hat Baralei Bondhu members, along with friends of Dakshinee Housing Estate, Phase 1, reached Gadkhali launch Ghat at 11PM on 11th July and boarded the launch where we spent the night and headed towards our destination early morning.It was a joint venture of Hat Baralei Bondhu and Dakshinee Housing Estate, Phase 1.
First we distributed relief material at Lahiripur, and then one by one at Kalidaspur, Kumirmari, Kumirmari Adibasipara, Choto-Mollakhali, Kochukhali and Ranipur. Our relief material consisted of family food packets of rice, dal,potato,onion,soyabean, mustard oil, salt, sugar, muri, cheera, biscuits, saris and sanitary napkins for women, children’s packet and dresses to children.
We have also surveyed almost the whole of Sundarban (West Bengal) area after the Amphan cyclone, talked to the villagers to know about their needs and necessity. As per our observation and survey report, we have seen that people in some remote areas are in extreme poverty.We felt the need to serve thousands of people of those areas who are in despair, whose crops,cattle,pisci-cultivation and every means of livelihood have been devoured by the Amphan and also due to long term lockdown. These areas are so remote and difficult to reach that they do not even receive any relief material. We were shocked to see old people and children, on hearing the sound of the launch engine, running through the forest amidst the breathing roots of Sundari trees, which may be pricking their bare feet, waving hands at us calling for food. This pathetic scenario made us decide to work in these areas only. Furthermore, the ill-fated people of these areas need our help in developing occupation for their livelihood, education of children and medical treatment.
